ABOUT THE DANCE

Why this term whirling dance?

Whirling dance is a movement practice inspired by the dervish dance, a meditative tradition with Sufi origins.

It consists of repetitive spinning, allowing participants to enter a state of deep focus and expanded awareness. This practice is a journey inward—a balance of physical movement and mental stillness—that fosters energy, harmony, and self-discovery.

Combining concentration, relaxation, breathwork, rhythm, and meditation, it invites participants to explore the vital energy that movement brings.

Suitable for all levels, this practice requires no prior experience—only an open heart and a willingness to surrender.

Recommandations

To fully enjoy your experience, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing along with socks or dance slippers.
Don't forget to bring something to stay hydrated and a small snack for the workshop.
If this is your first time whirling, have a light meal at least 90 minutes before the class to ensure your comfort and well-being during the practice.
Out of curiosity or simply for the joy of the experience, Sufi skirts will be available for borrowing during the workshop, but you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

About The Artist

Into The Whirl

A movement artist and explorer of whirling, Into The Whirl (Alfonso) began his journey in 2015, developing a personal and contemporary approach to this ancestral practice.

His path led him to Turkey, where he trained with Ziya Azazi, a pioneer in contemporary whirling, and completed the DIP (Dervish in Progress)  Teacher Education Program.

Inspired by this experience, he has developed an artistic and pedagogical project that merges dance, yoga, meditation, and improvisation, exploring whirling as a safe space for physical and sensory transformation.

His teaching has taken him to Spain, France, and Turkey, where he shares his approach through workshops that transform whirling into a tool for deepening body awareness and and the art of being present.

More than just a technique, whirling becomes a language, an experience, a state of being.
